Prepare Fair Overview
The Prepare Fair is a community event that takes preparedness into action and commemorates Michigan’s Preparedness Month. These events helped to strengthen relationships with first responders, educated the community on resources that are available right in their community, and provided information on the importance of being prepared for an emergency by making a plan, building a kit, being informed, and getting involved.
Since the EMHSD started the fair 6 years ago, there has only been one held in the month of September. This year, two were held. One on September 7, in Marquette and the second on September 21, in Mount Pleasant.
Throughout the evening at both events, participants had the opportunity to meet local first responders, explore emergency vehicles, and have discussions regarding personal preparedness. All attendees were given the opportunity to enter into drawings to receive preparedness items to help them in building an emergency kit. In addition to raffle items, information and preparedness promotional items were given out by the MSP/EMHSD and approximately 25 other emergency response agencies and nonprofit organizations. In Marquette, the Salvation Army cooked and served hot dogs provided by Target and in Mt. Pleasant, Cops & Doughnuts cooked and served hot dogs provided by Target and served donut holes donated by them. Both also distributed water and snacks.
The local radio station, WKQS in Marquette and the Moose in Mt. Pleasant, broadcasted live from the events and provided music, while other stations promoted the events as well.
On Thursday, September 7, 2017, the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) partnered with Marquette County Emergency Management, the Westwood Mall and Target to host the annual Prepare Fair. The event took place at the Westwood Mall parking lot in Marquette from 4 to 7 p.m.
This event was especially important due to the severe thunderstorms that caused significant damage in Marquette County in October of 2016.
Mt. Pleasant Fair:
On Thursday, September 21, 2017, the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) partnered with the Isabella County office of Emergency Management, Isabella County 9-1-1, and Cops & Doughnuts to host the annual Prepare Fair. The event took place at the Cops and Doughnuts parking lot at their Central Precinct in Mount Pleasant from 4-7 p.m.
This event was especially important due to the state and federal declaration that was recently granted for Isabella County and surrounding counties in June 2017. Isabella county residents experienced flash flooding which led to widespread damage to roads, personal property, and homes.
