Inside the School Bus Inspection Program
The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division is responsible for the annual inspection of every black and yellow school bus and pupil transportation vehicle operated in the state. Michigan has approximately 17,000 vehicles that transport in excess of 800,000 children over 10 million miles annually.
All public, private, denominational, parochial, charter school and public school academy vehicles transporting pupils to or from school, or school-related events, must be inspected. This includes every vehicle under contract or agreement.
Vehicles that have been inspected are identified with a sticker placed on the front windshield. The inspection sticker displays the Michigan State Police "shield" and the school calendar year it is valid for.
The State of Michigan and the Michigan State Police, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, are committed to ensuring that all children are transported to and from school in a safe manner. To that end, a comprehensive school bus inspection program has been developed.
School bus drivers are not eligible to operate with a Michigan Intrastate Medical Waiver.
Should you have questions regarding the school bus inspection program, or desire information relative to pupil transportation issues, please contact the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division at 517-284-3250.
The automated school bus inspection application allows each bus an assigned bar code that inspectors can scan to file a report. Information can now be updated at the touch of a button. In addition, a QR code is displayed on the service door of every bus once it is inspected. Anyone with a smart phone can scan QR codes to find out its current inspection condition and what district it is assigned to.
