Advanced Motorcycle Safety and Survival

Designed for the certified Motor Officer. The curriculum includes five hours of classroom instruction and 31 hours of hands-on training. The areas covered in class and during practical exercises are: 

  • Motor Officer Survival Skills
  • Advanced Lines of Travel
  • Motorcades
  • Formation Riding
  • Practical Street Riding
  • Traffic Stops
  • Motor Maintenance


Officers registering for the Advanced Motorcycle Safety and Survival Skills course must:

  • Be a certified police officer
  • Have previously attended, and successfully completed, a two week Basic Motor Officer School (The course must be approved by the MSP Precision Driving Unit)


Students must bring the following equipment for the class:

  • Department issued, factory backed, VIN designated motorcycle (Harley-Davidson or BMW)
  • Valid driver's license with cycle endorsement
  • Riding boots (must cover the ankle)
  • Departmental/personal protective jacket
  • Rain suit (pants and jacket)
  • Eye protection (sunglasses) with shatter proof lens
  • Full fingered leather gloves

OPTIONAL: students may elect to bring their own DOT approved ¾ style open face helmet (No full face helmets will be allowed)

The Advanced Motorcycle Safety and Survival Skills course is MCOLES approved and 302 funds can be utilized for the class.
