The Michigan State Police (MSP) is investigating a confrontation that occurred today between three individuals attempting to sit in the House gallery and members of the House of Representatives police department.
Preliminary investigation indicates that three individuals entered the House of Representatives gallery today at approximately 10:15 a.m. to view the House of Representatives session. Upon being notified by a House sergeant that the gallery was closed and being asked to leave, the three individuals proceeded to remain in the gallery. House sergeants then attempted to remove the individuals using force.
Because the incident occurred within the House chamber, MSP personnel were not involved in the altercation as the chamber is the jurisdiction of the Sergeant at Arms; however, a MSP state properties security sergeant did enter the gallery and verbally intervene in an attempt to separate the individuals. MSP personnel were also on-scene outside the chamber; although they had no physical contact with the individuals.
One individual did leave the Capitol via ambulance based on her request for medical assistance. No arrests were made.
As part of the investigation, statements will be obtained from everyone involved, pictures of any injuries will be documented and all available video footage of the confrontation will be obtained. Once the investigation is complete, a report will be forwarded to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office for review and determination on whether criminal charges are merited.
