Virtual Moral Injury & Aces: Critical Factors Being Missed in the Veteran Suicide Discussion

2024-11-07T15:00:00Z 2024-11-07T17:00:00Z Virtual Moral Injury & Aces: Critical Factors Being Missed in the Veteran Suicide Discussion

At least 20 service members and veterans die by suicide every day, with suicide being the second-leading cause of death for post-9/11 veterans. “Gold standard” treatments for PTS are largely based on evidence from civilian survivors of sexual assault, not veterans who have experienced military and/or combat trauma. These EBTs also miss (and can exacerbate) two important types of trauma: Moral Injury and ACEs. In this presentation, participants will learn how spiritual and cumulative trauma play a critical role in veteran suicidality through use of current research and veteran testimonials. Promising paths towards healing will also be discussed.

As a result of this course, participants will be prepared to:

1. Define Moral Injury

2. Explain how Moral Injury is different than PTSD

3. Explore how Moral Injury and ACEs contribute to veteran suicidality

4. Describe the difference between treatment and healing
