Join a naturalist for a casual stroll through one of our state parks or local historic areas. Each month, we’ll focus on a topic related to natural or cultural history. Wear your walking shoes and dress for the weather – we’ll go out rain, snow or shine!

In August, we'll explore Haven Hill Natural Area, within the Highland State Recreation Area, a 5,900-acre state recreation area in the southeast part of Michigan. Haven Hill Natural Area was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1976. This site was self-sufficient retreat for the Edsel and Eleanor Ford family through the 1930s and early 1940s and included a lodge, riding stables, barn and swimming pool. The gatehouse, carriage house and some farm buildings still remain.

This adventure will include stops at several sites, so be prepared to caravan and enter/exit your vehicle at regular intervals. Walking distance to sites will vary. There are uneven surfaces and changes in elevation along some of the trails. For more information, visit fohravolunteers.org/hiking. This tour will be led by a member of the Friends of Highland Recreation Area.

Preregistration is required. This is a free, outdoor event.
