Gov. Rick Snyder makes reappointments to Iron Industry Museum Advisory Board

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the reappointments of Charles Swanson, of Marquette, and Bob Niemela, of Ontonagon, to the Iron Industry Museum Advisory Board.

Housed within the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the nine-member board advises the department on policies, plans and programs concerning the Negaunee Township-based Michigan Iron Industry Museum, part of the Michigan Historical Museum System. The board also supports education programs and public use of the facility.

"I am confident these appointees will continue to support preservation of Michigan’s iron history on behalf of the museum and the state," Snyder said.

Swanson is president of Swanson, Mercier & Associates Inc., a real estate and consulting firm. He previously served as vice president of commercial real estate lending for the former D & N Bank, now Citizen's Bank, and served as vice president of Upper Michigan Operations. Swanson is a member of the Great Lakes Olympic Training Center Association and the Marquette Area Chamber of Commerce, and a past chairman of the Michigan State Board of Real Estate Appraisers. He earned an associate's degree in real estate from Macomb Community College and a bachelor's degree in business from Northern Michigan University. He continues to represent the Historical Society of the County of Marquette.

Niemela is president of New Dimensions Technologies, LLC, a virtual manufacturer. He has decades of experience in the mineral industry as well as operations management and engineering supervision, regulatory and environmental affairs and basic research with new technologies. Niemela earned a bachelor's degree in mining engineering from Michigan Technological University. He continues to represent the mineral industry.

The appointees will serve four-year terms expiring Oct. 4, 2019. Appointments are not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
