November 11 through November 17, 2012: Elevator Escalator Safety Awareness Week

WHEREAS, the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation estimates that riders in the United States travel on 900,000 elevators and 35,000 escalators each year; in Michigan, there are more than 27,000 elevators and escalators throughout the state; and,

WHEREAS, children and adults over 65 are considered the most at risk of elevator and escalator injury due to falls and other accidents; and,

WHEREAS, the purpose of this week is to educate the public and increase awareness of the safe and responsible use of elevators, escalators and moving walks; and,

 

WHEREAS, the elevator industry is committed to the safety of all Michiganders, and the proper use of elevators, escalators and moving walks greatly contributes to the comfort and quality of life;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Sunday, November 11 through Saturday, November 17, 2012 as Elevator Escalator Safety Awareness Week in Michigan.
