Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan
WHEREAS, American Indians and Alaska Natives contribute greatly to the social, political and economic fabric of our country; and,
WHEREAS, this year's theme, Honoring and Protecting American Indian Elders, emphasizes the importance of honoring American Indian elders, and ensuring they are protected from physical, emotional, social and financial victimization; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Human Services, Michigan's 12 federally recognized tribes and various community organizations to encourage citizens throughout Michigan to recognize the many contributions and great influence of American Indian and Alaska Native heritage in the United States;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2011 as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month in Michigan.
