October 10, 2012 - Berkley Screw Machine Products, Inc. in Rochester Hills received the CET Gold Award yesterday for an outstanding safety and health record from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA). The MIOSHA program is part of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).

"We are honored to present this award to Berkley Screw Machine Products. Manufacturing facilities have significant workplace hazards and we are pleased to recognize your exemplary record of protecting your workers," said LARA Deputy Director Rob Nederhood. "Your dedication sends the message to Michigan employers that focusing on safety up front is a sound business decision."

MIOSHA Director Martha Yoder presented the award to the Team of Berkley Screw.  Berkley Screw Machine has gone more than five years without a lost-time accident. The company has been certified ISO-9001:2008 since 2000, which demonstrates its commitment to quality and continual improvement.

The MIOSHA Consultation Education and Training (CET) Division recognizes the safety and health achievements of Michigan employers and employees through CET Awards, which are based on excellent safety and health performance. The CET Gold Award recognizes an outstanding safety record of two years or more without a lost time accident.

"We're very pleased to receive this award recognizing the outstanding safety record of our employees and our company," said Patricia Lewis, CEO, Berkley Screw. "At our company, safety goes hand-in-hand with quality, and we're proud to excel at both."

Berkley Screw Machine employs 29 workers and has a well-developed safety and health system and an actively engaged Safety and Health Committee. CET Senior Industrial Hygienist Kristin Osterkamp and CET Senior Safety Consultant Lee Jay Kueppers conducted hazard surveys at the plant. This allowed the company the opportunity to walk through the facility with MIOSHA representatives and correct problem areas that were noted.

Berkley Screw Machine is classified under NAICS code 332721 -Precision Turned Product Manufacturing, which is considered a high-hazard industry. Their total day's away/restricted cases (DART) rate was 0.0 in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011, compared to the BLS Michigan rate of 3.4 in 2007, 2.7 in 2008, 1.0 in 2009, and 3.4 in 2010 and 2011.

Besides going more than two years without a lost-time accident, the facility has completed the following criteria to receive the Gold Award:

  • Developed and implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system;
  • Established a safety and health committee, with both employee and management participation;
  • Developed an employee training system, with an emphasis on how to do the work in a safe and healthful manner; and
  • Worked diligently to change their workplace culture to reflect the importance of worker safety.

"Companies that establish an integrated safety and health program reap the benefits of significantly reducing their injury and illness rates," said Yoder. "Reducing these rates not only protects employees - it has a healthy impact on a company's bottom line."
