Insurance counselors (anyone engaged in the business of auditing or abstracting policies of insurance or annuities or giving advice with respect to the benefits promised) are required to be licensed. Substance use disorder counselors, providing services to publicly funded clients, are required to be certified through the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) in addition to any license that may be held. The Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals is a member of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) and can be contacted at 517-347-0891 or www.mcbap.com.

All applicants seeking a teaching certificate with an NT-School Counselor endorsement and those wishing to apply for a School Counselor License must apply to the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) to be evaluated for those credentials. Apply to MDE for certification by logging into www.michigan.gov/MOECS only if you have completed a school counselor education program.
