Wastewater discharges to a municipal sewer system Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) are regulated by the local municipality or sewer authority. For information about permits and fees contact the authority directly.
There are variations in the design and operation of POTWs that determine the capabilities of the plant to accept and treat certain wastes. Contact your local sewer authority for a copy of the local sewer use and pretreatment ordinances to determine if your waste can be accepted by its facility. Also, review with your local sewer authority any requirements for discharge such as monitoring, record keeping, sampling, and whether industrial pretreatment regulations apply.
Any business wishing to connect to an existing sanitary sewer must obtain approval from the Sewer Authority before the connection is made. If the project involves the installation of public sewer, then a Wastewater Collection and Treatment Facilities Construction Permit must be issued to the owner of the sewer system (e.g. the city or township) from EGLE.
