Steps for getting a REAL ID
NOTE: If you already have an enhanced driver’s license or enhanced state ID card, it is already REAL ID-compliant and will be recognized at airports as a REAL ID, with or without the REAL ID star. You don’t need to take any further action. When it is replaced or renewed in the future, the new one will have the REAL ID star.
>> Step 1: Make an appointment at Michigan.gov/SOS
or call 888-SOS-MICH (888-767-6424).
>> Step 2: Bring the following documents to the SOS.
NOTE: Faxes and photocopies will not be accepted.
If your name is different from what’s on your birth certificate, you’ll need to bring
in a certified name-change document, such as a marriage license or court order.
Name-change documents must show both the changed name and the previous name.
Divorce decrees may be used if they are certified (copies are not accepted) and if they
show the changed name and the previous name. Multiple documents may be needed
if your name has changed more than once.
First Michigan license or state ID card: If you are applying for your first (original) Michigan driver’s
license or state ID card, you will need to bring additional documents. Learn more here.
