Renewing a Driver's License by Mail

You may renew your valid Michigan driver's license by mail if all of the following conditions apply:

  • You have a standard license, an enhanced license or a chauffeur's license. (You can't renew a commercial driver's license by mail.)
  • You aren't listed on the sex offender registry.
  • You didn't renew by mail last time.
  • Your Social Security number has been verified with the Social Security Administration.

Approximately 45 days before your driver's license expires, the Secretary of State will mail you a renewal notice to the last address the department has on file for you.

Once your renewal application has been processed, your new photo license will be mailed to you. It is valid for up to four years.
