ASE Conversion Information
Individuals who hold certification(s) issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) should be advised that ASE certification alone does not qualify you as a State certified mechanic in Michigan. However, you may be eligible to apply for State certification and transfer ASE categories of repair to your mechanic certification in lieu of taking the state certification exams.
The State of Michigan will waive the State of Michigan testing requirement for those individuals who hold current ASE Professional Series test credentials in certain corresponding categories. The ASE Conversion Table will show which categories are accepted.
Student level ASE tests will not qualify for certification. Any person holding student level ASE credentials will have to successfully pass a State of Michigan mechanic test to qualify for certification.
How to Provide ASE Credentials
The method of submission for ASE credential verification has changed as of October 2, 2018. Proof of ASE certification will no longer be submitted by the individual but will be verified by ASE through a function of their myASE website. Each ASE certified individual has a myASE account that can be configured to provide employers or other third parties with a secure link that shows current ASE certifications. It will be the responsibility of the individual to add the Business Licensing Section to the list of those with access to their certifications. No other methods of ASE credential validation will be accepted.
To submit proof of ASE certification for a new application, addition of certification categories, or for recertification purposes, your myASE account must be configured to allow the Business Licensing Section access to your credentials. The following instructions explain how to configure your myASE account. If you need further assistance, there is a myASE Visual Walkthrough, or you may call the Business Licensing Section at 1-888-SOS-MICH (1-888-767-6424).
