Individuals who hold certification(s) issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) should be advised that ASE certification alone does not qualify you as a State certified mechanic in Michigan.
ASE Conversion Information
Individuals who hold certification(s) issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) should be advised that ASE certification alone does not qualify you as a State certified mechanic in Michigan. However, you may be eligible to apply for State certification and transfer ASE categories of repair to your mechanic certification in lieu of taking the state certification exams.
The State of Michigan will waive the State of Michigan testing requirement for those individuals who hold current ASE Professional Series test credentials in certain corresponding categories. The ASE Conversion Table will show which categories are accepted.
Student level ASE tests will not qualify for certification. Any person holding student level ASE credentials will have to successfully pass a State of Michigan mechanic test to qualify for certification.
How to Provide ASE Credentials
ASE recently upgraded their website and broke the link that they use to allow individuals to send their credentials directly to us for verification. Until further notice we will accept a copy of your ASE status letter which can be downloaded in .pdf format directly from your ASE account to your PC and then sent via email to us. Download the letter from the ASE website and email it to Licensing@michigan.gov with ASE and your mechanic number in the subject line. Example: ASE M123456 If you do not yet have a mechanic number, write ASE and your 10 digit phone number. Example: ASE 517 555 1234
This notice will be removed when the system returns to normal functionality which should be sometime in early 2021.
