  • High School Voter Registration Challenge

MI Vote Matters is a partnership of the Michigan Secretary of State and nonpartisan organizations to encourage high schools across the state to hold voter registration drives and earn recognition for their efforts to register a majority of eligible students to vote.

The Challenge

  • Panel 2

It is easier than ever to get students who are at least 17.5 years old civically engaged through pre-registration so they will automatically become active voters on their 18th birthday. Those who are already 18 can register and vote right away.

Interested schools can visit inspire2vote.org/MIVoteMatters to receive an action kit for administrators and teachers to use in preparing for and holding voter registration drives. The materials will be mailed or emailed and schools may affirm their participation by completing a form and returning it.

Each school will have the opportunity to receive special recognition from the Secretary of State, which will be determined by their success in registering a majority of eligible students to vote:

    • Gold: 90% and above of all eligible high school seniors registered
    • Silver: 70% and above of all eligible high school seniors registered
    • Bronze: 50% of all eligible high school seniors registered

Registration numbers will be tracked through student completion of a paper or online "Pledge to Vote" after registering.

The program runs through June 30, 2022, and will conclude with recognition of qualifying schools by the Secretary of State.

Student voter registration and pledge

Students who are at least 17.5 years old can pre/register online at Michigan.gov/Vote, by completing and mailing in this voter registration application or by visiting their city or township clerk's office. Upon pre/registering, students would then need to complete a Pledge to Vote at inspire2vote.org/pledge, which will count toward their school's participation numbers.
