BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Secretary of State Mobile Office will be open for business at a veterans "Stand Down" event at the Share Center Friday, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced today.

The Share Center is located at 120 Grove Street and the Stand Down runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"Stand Down" events for veterans were first organized in 1988 by a group of Vietnam Veterans in California. Since then, they have been used by veteran organizations to provide services to veterans, especially homeless veterans, in special events across the country.

"These events are tailored to the needs of those who have served this country, who sacrificed and at times put their lives on the line," said Johnson. "We need to ensure that they have every benefit they have earned and deserve. With our mobile office on site, they'll easily be able to handle any business they would normally do at a branch office."

Johnson, co-founder of OPERATION: OUR TROOPS COUNT, has made assisting Michigan's 680,000 veterans a priority for her office. In addition to pushing for a special new driver's license designation for veterans, expected to debut next year, she's also working with state veteran organizations to put information for veterans in local Secretary of State branches.
