GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Secretary of State's office will offer visitors the option to sign up for text and emails reminding them that it's time to get their tabs at the 2014 Grand Rapids Boat Show, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced today. They can also sign up for election reminders.
The show opens Wednesday and runs through Feb. 23 at DeVos Place, 303 Monroe Ave. N.W. in Grand Rapids. Customers can use computers set up at the Secretary of State booth to sign up for the department's electronic newsletter as well as the email and text reminders. They're also welcome to access www.ExpressSOS.com and complete secure transactions right at the show.
"These days, cell phones are everywhere, and we're tapping into the latest technology to help you remember when your license plate tabs expire or when your community has an election," Johnson said. "We can sign you up right at our booth. This is also a great time to learn about renewing your watercraft at ExpressSOS.com. Stop by and let our friendly staff answer your questions."
Watercraft registration renewal notices are mailed out in March by the Secretary of State's office. Michigan has 902,519 boats registered in the state, down slightly from last year.
"Since taking office, it has been very obvious that Secretary Johnson has an acute understanding of the boating industry and the economic impact that it has on our state," said show producer Henri Boucher. "The Grand Rapids Boat Show, now in its 69th year, is a true celebration of the boating lifestyle of Michiganders."
Besides displaying the latest in power boats, pontoons, kayaks and canoes, the show offers a free boating safety certification course on Feb. 22, courtesy of the Kent County Sheriff's Department. Throughout the show visitors can also learn basic sailing techniques and how to read a nautical chart.
The booth will be open during the length of the event. Show hours are as follows:
