What should I do if I cannot get an appointment to complete my transaction before the expiration date?

If eligible, Michigan residents are encouraged to attempt to renew their credentials online at Michigan.gov/SOS during this time. All standard vehicle registrations may be renewed online, at a self-service station or by mail at any time.

For those that require an in-person branch visit to complete their transaction, we advise that customers visit Michigan.gov/SOS at 8 a.m. or noon, Monday through Friday to schedule an appointment for the next day.

Additionally, per Public Acts 304, 305, and 306 of 2020, expirations for all driver’s licenses, state ID cards, temporary instruction permits, and registrations for vehicles, recreational vehicles, and trailers expiring on or after March 1, 2020, will be extended through March 31, 2021. The Michigan Department of State is required to waive late fees during this time. Customers are advised to renew their credentials as soon as possible as appointments do fill up quickly.
