My temporary instruction permit or level 1 expired on or after March 1, 2020. Can I renew my credential?

Per Public Act 304 of 2020, expirations for temporary instruction permits and graduated driver’s licenses expiring on or after March 1, 2020, will be extended through March 31, 2021.

Student drivers who hold a graduated level 1 permit that expired on or after March 1, 2020, can schedule a road skills test using the expired permit. At the time of their road skills test with a third-party testing company, they must provide their Level 1 permit, Segment 2 certificate, and driving log proving they have completed all required practice hours.

Student drivers who hold a Level 1 permit but have not yet completed the Segment 2 course or all required practice hours must schedule an appointment online at Michigan.gov/SOS to apply for a temporary instruction permit at a Secretary of State branch office.
