Which driver's license and state identification card transactions may be completed by appointment?
Many driver's license and state ID transactions - including renewals and replacements - can be completed online at Michigan.gov/SOS or at a self-service station if a new photo isn't required.
Customers can determine whether they are eligible to complete their license or ID transaction without a branch office appointment by visiting Michigan.gov/SOS and selecting Online Services.
Customers who must complete their license or ID transaction in person at Secretary of State branch may schedule an appointment for the following:
- First-time Michigan driver's license, ID, or permit: Customers are encouraged to pre-apply for their first-time driver's license or state ID ahead of their appointment online at Michigan.gov/SOS.
- Driver's license/ID renewal or conversion to REAL ID
- Driver's license/ID replacement or correction: Replacement from loss or correction because of name change, gender designation, seasonal commercial driver's license (CDL) or other change.
- Enhanced driver's license/ID: Credentials are already REAL ID compliant and many can be renewed, replaced, and corrected without a branch appointment.
