Steps

  • Overview

If you have a qualifying disability or live with someone who does, you may apply for a disability license plate. A qualifying disability is defined as:

    • Blindness
    • Any condition that significantly limits your ability to walk
    • Any condition that requires a wheelchair, walker, crutch or other assistive device

A disability plate doesn't qualify you for free parking. You must have a disability parking placard with a yellow free-parking sticker to park for free. Get more information on placards and disability parking.

Your disability plate expires on your birthday.

  • Eligibility

    Individual:

A disability plate can be issued to:

    • Passenger vehicles
    • Mobile homes
    • Pick-up trucks
    • Individually owned vans

    Organization:

Disability plates are also issued to organizations that serve and transport people with disabilities.

  • Method

    By mail:

Fill out a disability plate application. A physician's statement will be required as part of the application. Mail the completed application to:

    Michigan Department of State
    Renewal by Mail Unit
    Lansing, MI 48918

    Branch office appointment:

Bring either your disability plate application or your disability parking placard to a branch office.

THIS TRANSACTION IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE IN BRANCH OFFICES

  • Fees

    • No plate fee is due when replacing an existing plate with a standard white disability plate.
    • A $5 plate fee is due when purchasing a Spectacular Peninsulas or Mackinac Bridge disability plate.
    • Additional fees are due when ordering a disability fundraising plate or personalizing the plate.
    • When ordering a disability plate at renewal, or when purchasing a new vehicle, your regular registration fees will still apply.
    • Passenger vehicles, pick-ups and vans equipped with permanently installed wheelchair lift equipment or permanently installed hand controls are eligible for a 50 percent reduction in the annual registration fee if the vehicle is owned by a wheelchair user, or by someone in the household responsible for transporting the wheelchair user. Additional service fees, such as those for personalizing the plate or for purchasing and renewing a fundraising version, are excluded from the discount. Vans used for commercial purposes aren't eligible for the reduced rate.
