Radioactive Materials Registration

The Materials Management Division within the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) issues Radioactive Material Registrations to users of radioactive materials that do not fall under the regulatory authority of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

NAME OF PERMIT OR APPROVAL: Radioactive Material Registration.

STATUTORY AUTHORITYPart 135, Radiation Control of the Public Health Code, Public Act 368 of 1978, as amended.

APPLICABLE REGULATION: Part 135, Section 13505 and Michigan Ionizing Radiation Rules (R 325.5001 – R 325.5511) (Part 135).

SUMMARY OF REGISTRATION/APPROVAL PROCESS:

Applicability (activities that require the permit): EGLE requires that users of radioactive materials which are not licensed by the NRC register with the Materials Management Division. Radionuclides that fall within this category are Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) or Technologically Enhanced Radioactive Material (TERM). 

Radioactive materials included under the provisions of an NRC license do not need to be registered with the State. 

Pre-Application Requirements: None.

Application Submission Requirements: Radioactive Materials Registration Form EQP-1614 should be used.

Procedures and Time-Frame for Registration: Applicant submits the EQP-1614 to the Materials Management Division, either electronically or in hard-copy to:

Approval of registration usually occurs within one week.

Operational Requirements: Registrants must abide by applicable Ionizing Radiation Rules governing radioactive materials.

Fees: None.

Appeal Process: Pursuant to Section 333.1205 of the Public Health Code, permit approval/denial decisions can be appealed following the requirements of the Administrative Procedures Act of 1969, PA 306, as amended.
