Michigan Advanced Assessing Officer (MAAO)

The State Tax Commission (STC) offers two paths to certification at the MAAO Level.  Individuals must hold MCAO certification for one year prior to beginning the STC online/lecture hybrid program or the Self-Paced courses.

 

Path 1:  State Tax Commission Online/Lecture Hybrid Program:

The online/lecture hybrid program is a one year program.  MAAO instructors work with students using online tools and conduct eight classroom instruction sessions held on Saturday's from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The application period for the October 2019 program is now closed.  Applications for the April 2019 program will be available January 1, 2019.

Path 2:  Self-Paced Program:

MAAO self-paced courses are offered through approved the State Tax Commission and approved outside organizations.  Students must complete seven tested courses and a USPAP Course in order to achieve MAAO Certification.  Students must first take Principles of Appraising, then Statistics and then Basic Income before any other courses can be taken.  There is no application to begin the Self-Paced Program and there is no timeframe to complete the courses.

Sponsoring an MAAO Course

An organization wishing to sponsor and offer a MAAO course, must complete all documents contained within the MAAO Organization Program Packet (Organization Application, Organization Security Agreement, Instructor Agreement and Agreement to Proctor an Examination) and submit the completed packet to the State Tax Commission.

Self-Paced Courses:

The State Tax Commission is pleased to announce that they will sponsor in the late 2019 / early 2020 the MAAO Self-Paced Courses in an online/lecture hybrid format at a cost of $250/course.  Each course will be limited to 35 students.  Individuals must hold a valid MCAO Certification to attend and be actively working toward MAAO Certification.  Registration can only be made by mail and the registration form and payment must be received no later than the deadline.

Individuals who received their MCAO Certification after January 1, 2019 must hold that certification for one year before they can begin self-paced courses.  The State Tax Commission has mandated that individuals who begin the MAAO self-paced courses after January 1, 2019 must take the first three courses in order:  Principles of Appraising, Statistics and Basic Income prior to completing any other classes.  All exams for these courses are offered online.

Land Value Determinations and ECF's will be offered from January 12, 2020 to February 29, 2020 with the classroom session on February 29, 2020.  Applications are due by December 1, 2019.

Basic Income will be offered from March 1, 2020 to April 11, 2020 with the classroom session April 11, 2020.  Applications are due by February 1, 2020.

Property Tax Administration will be offered from July 19, 2020 to August 29, 2020 with the classroom session on August 29, 2020.  Applications are due by June 15, 2020.

USPAP for Michigan Assessors is required in order to obtain your MAAO Certification.  This course will be offered at a cost of $50.  This course will be offered:

November 8, 2019.  Registration is due October 28, 2019.

April 24, 2020.  Registration is due March 15, 2010.

July 17, 2020.  Registration is due June 15, 2020.

October 9, 2020.  Registration is due September 10, 2020.

In addition, we are offering the HP 12-C course is recommended for all assessors at a cost of $50.  This course has also been approved for Appraiser continuing education credit.  This course will be offered:

April 23, 2020.  Registration is due March 15, 2020.

September 11, 2020.  Registration is due August 14, 2020.

Upper Peninsula MAAO Class Offerings

The State Tax Commission is pleased to announce that they will sponsor in the summer and fall of 2019 the MAAO Self-Paced Courses in an online/lecture hybrid format in the Upper Peninsula, specifically in Marquette, at a cost of $250/course.  Each course will be limited to 35 students.  Individuals must hold a valid MCAO Certification to attend and be actively working toward MAAO Certification.

USPAP will be offered as a one day course on January 11, 2020 at a cost of $50.00.  Applications are due by November 27, 2019.
