September 17, 2020: Mucinous Ovarian Cancer Day

WHEREAS, ovarian cancer accounts for more deaths than any other cancer of the reproductive system, with nearly 22,000 women diagnosed each year; and,

 

WHEREAS, an estimated 3 to 5% of these diagnoses are a rare form known as mucinous ovarian cancer; and,

 

WHEREAS, this disease affects women of all ages, backgrounds, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds, who are our mothers, our daughters, our sisters, our spouses, and our friends; and,

 

WHEREAS, recognizing the need for more information about this disease, a  group of Michiganders joined forces and launched the Mucinous Ovarian Cancer Coalition on September 17th, the birthdate of the Coalition’s founder; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Coalition is dedicated to funding research on mucinous ovarian cancer, while also offering emotional and financial support to women living with this disease;

 

NOW THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 17, 2020, as Mucinous Ovarian Cancer Day in Michigan.
