As a result of the federal regulations governing storm water discharges, the State of Michigan began issuing permit coverage in 1994. There are three types of permits available in Michigan: a generic baseline general permit, a generic general permit with monitoring requirements, or a site specific individual permit. There are approximately 4,000 facilities with storm water discharge authorization.

Michigan's storm water permit authorization requires facilities to obtain a certified operator to have supervision and control over the control structures at the facility, eliminate any unauthorized nonstorm water discharges, develop and implement a storm water pollution prevention plan for their facility, including structural and nonstructural control measures.  The certification process for industrial site operators is currently an on going process in each of our district offices.

How do I get a Permit

Once you have determined that a permit (Who needs a permit?)is required for your facility, please review the appropriate general permit. Each general permit is associated with a cycle year and watershed.
