Inland Lakes Monitoring

Inland lakes are valuable ecological resources and provide tremendous aesthetic, economic, and recreational value for the people of Michigan.  Michigan's unique geographical location provides its citizens with a wealth of freshwater resources including over 11,000 inland lakes.  The Water Resources Division (WRD) works with many agencies and local partners to assess the condition of Michigan’s inland lakes.

Michigan Lake Water Clarity Dashboard

The Michigan Lake Water Clarity dashboard contains satellite-derived data for lake clarity, lake algal biomass, and lake color as indicators of water quality and clarity. Remote sensing data from the Sentinel 2 satellite were analyzed for all ponded waterbodies in Michigan greater than 20 acres. Lake data from the images were analyzed for the ice-free season from May through October for each year from 2018 to 2023.
