MDOT operates 61 rest areas along major freeways and roadways, open 24/7 for travelers’ convenience. Each offers restrooms, picnic areas, paved parking and drinking water, with locations spaced about an hour apart. You can easily find rest areas that feature family rest rooms and dedicated dog runs by selecting a rest area or welcome center in the interactive map, which displays the amenities available at each site.
Visitors sometimes encounter rest areas that aren’t as clean as expected, especially during periods of heavy traffic. When large numbers of travelers arrive at once, such as when multiple tour buses stop, conditions can deteriorate quickly, including overflowing trash cans and increased litter. Our staff increases inspections during busy times, but high use can outpace maintenance efforts, and not all visitors dispose of waste responsibly.
Despite these challenges and limited funding that prevents around‑the‑clock staffing, MDOT crews work hard to address issues as quickly as possible. We remain committed to keeping our rest areas clean, safe and welcoming for all travelers.
