Programming
Academic Programming
Our academic classes are led by certified teachers focused on improving students' basic skills in the areas of math, reading and language arts, social studies and science with the goal of preparing you to take and pass the High School Equivalency Exam. These classes are broken down into two categories: Adult Basic Education (ABE) and High School Equivalency (HSE). We also offer Title I services for all prisoners under 22 years of age. Classes are enrolled based on prior HSE and TABE scores, Parole Board Jurisdiction Date (PBJ), Title I status, and Fast Track. All prisoners who do not have a verified HSE must actively participate in classes working toward their HSE completion.
Digital Learning
Students learn soft skills essential to obtaining and keeping a job upon release including following instructions, adhering to time and attendance rules, problem solving, critical thinking skills, and functioning as a team. This is an intensive curriculum involving digital literacy, computer training and other skills. This Core Program includes testing for TOSA and Federal Deposit Insurance Cooperation (FDIC) Money Smart Credentials.
Vocational Programming - Welding
The NCF Welding Program prepares prisoners for an entry-level welding position in manufacturing or construction. NCF operates with two welding instructors, giving the opportunity to run two classes at a time. Prisoners in the program learn not only welding skills, but also skills valuable to employers such as safety, communication, time management and work ethic. Prisoners who successfully complete the program can receive credentials from nationally recognized agencies such as the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and the American Welding Society (AWS).
Other Programming
Several substance abuse programming options are offered at Newberry Correctional Facility to include Substance Abuse Treatment Intervention (SUTI), Core Cognitive Intervention (CCI), Violence Prevention Intervention(VPI), Alcohol Anonymous (AA), and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) groups.
The facility also offers general and law library access, various indoor and outdoor recreational activities, musical groups, barber services, several religious options, a variety of self-help classes and a self-help library.
NCF currently provides housing and training for shelter dogs through a local animal shelter.
Prisoners are provided with on-site routine medical, dental, optical, and mental health services. More serious problems and emergencies are treated at, or referred to, area hospitals and clinics.
Security
The perimeter security includes a buffer fence, double chain link fences, razor-ribbon wire, electronic detection systems and an armed patrol vehicle. Measures are in place to deter the amount of contraband entering the facility and in locating contraband that prisoners may have in their possession. Metal detectors are also utilized.
