Mission  Statement

The mission of the  W.J.   Maxey Boys Training School is to rehabilitate delinquent youth, 12 to 20 years of age, who have been adjudicated for felony offenses and placed at the Training School by court order.  The goal of all Maxey programs is to develop productive and law-abiding adult citizens.

OVERVIEW

The  W.J.   Maxey Boys Training School is a residential treatment facility for delinquent male youth, 12 to 21 years of age.  The facility is centrally located in southeast Michigan , placing it within an hour's drive of Detroit , Flint , Lansing , Pontiac and Jackson .  The W.J. Maxey Boys Training School serves the entire state of Michigan .  Youth are admitted at the request of the adjudicating court, the state Juvenile Justice Specialist (JJS) and the Juvenile Justice Assignment Unit.

THE PHILOSOPHY

The  W.J.   Maxey Boys Training School serves the needs of Michigan youth who require intensive or specialized rehabilitation treatment and a high level of program security and structure to provide personal and community safety.

Individualized treatment planning is developed under the supervision of clinical professionals.  The plan is implemented through a multi-disciplinary treatment team composed of direct care workers, teachers, clinical social workers and specialized consultants under the direction of a masters-level program manager.  Individual, group and family approaches are used to stabilize behavior, build thinking and decision making skills, and develop pro-social and productive behavior patterns.

SECURITY

The Training School offers two security levels; high and medium-closed.  The facility and surrounding property are kept secure through perimeter fencing, video surveillance and electronic monitoring.  Youth in medium-closed secure programs are eligible for occasional off-campus activities such as community service projects.  The Maxey Intake Unit collects significant background and consent materials and ensures that youth are screened for proper placement by program and security level.  Movement between security levels may occur as youth progress in the program in cooperation with the committing court.

TREATMENT

Specialized and individualized treatment programming is available to all Maxey residents as their ongoing treatment needs and assessments indicate.

Areas of specialized programming include:

  • Sex Offender Treatment
  • Substance Abuse Education and Treatment
  • Criminal Behavior Treatment
  • Behavioral Health Treatment

Each treatment program is augmented with services from clinical staff including assessment, therapy, testing and medication review.

Educational Services

The youth at  W.J.   Maxey Boys Training School are provided a full-day, year-round educational program through our NCA accredited academic program.  A full-services Academic Center is attached to the Training School and there is a block of additional classrooms within the Family Service Center portion of the building.  All of the teachers are State certified educators.  Youth are provided with an individualized basic education, special education or college education curriculum.  Additionally, youth participate in a variety of life skills and vocational training classes - such as construction trades, cosmetology and graphic design.

Health Services

The  W.   J. Maxey Boys Training School operates a state-of-the-art Health and Dental Services Clinic.  The Clinic is able to offer top quality health care to the youth.  The clinic employs a physician, nurses, a dentist, a dental hygienist, an optometrist and maintains a full staff of medical support personnel.   Youth requiring medical attention beyond the abilities of Maxey Health Services are referred to the St. Joseph and University of Michigan Hospital Systems .

AUXILIARY SERVICES

Safety

The  W.J.   Maxey Boys Training School is committed to ensuring community safety and continued success of youth.  This commitment drives auxiliary efforts that teach responsibility, respect and care.

Restorative Justice

Youth are required to participate in BARJ activities at Maxey.  These projects have included building houses for Habitat for Humanity, volunteering at area soup kitchens, donating earned funds to domestic violence centers and supporting  Michigan soldiers stationed overseas.  In addition, Maxey regularly hosts Victim Impact Panels that promote empathy and healing among participants.

Spiritual Development

Maxey provides a complete range of spiritual development activities and services under the coordination of the institutional chaplain.  Special events and an annual renewal celebration encourage youth to examine and develop their spiritual standing.  A spiritual adoption program (SAMMY) has proven highly successful in promoting community reintegration of released youth.

Community Reintegration

Youth at W.J. Maxey are helped to develop and implement a plan of community reintegration which includes education, employment and counseling.  Often times, a step down to lower security level programs are utilized.  Eligible youth receive services from Michigan Rehabilitative Services upon release.
