  • Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development - Water Soldier Invasive Species Order DRAFT Dec 11, 2014 PDF iconUnder the provisions of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, the Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development shall add insect or plant species to the State's list of prohibited species if they meet the criteria specified under MCL 324.41302(3)(a). The plant species water soldier (Stratiotes aloides) is one of the sixteen least wanted species named at a meeting of the Great Lakes Governors and Premiers, and it meets the legal requirements to be added to Michigan's list of prohibited species. Water soldier is an aquatic plant that forms dense mats that crowd out natural vegetation and it has sharp serrated leaves that can cut skin. This draft order will be taken up by the Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development at their meeting on January 21, 2015.
