State Board of Education

About the State Board

The Michigan State Board of Education (SBE) provides leadership and general supervision over public education in Michigan. Established under Article VIII, Section 3 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963, the State Board guides statewide education policy, advises on educational priorities, and supports efforts to improve educational opportunities and outcomes for Michigan students.

The State Board consists of eight members elected statewide to eight-year terms. The Governor serves as an ex officio member without the right to vote. The Board also appoints the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, who serves as the chief executive officer of the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and is responsible for implementing State Board policies and overseeing the department's operations.
