Mission, Vision, Shared Values & Operating Principles

Mission and Vision
Mission Logo
The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) provides financial and technical assistance through public and private partnerships to create and preserve decent, affordable housing for low-and moderate-income residents and to engage in community economic development activities to revitalize urban and rural communities.

Vision logo
At MSHDA, we are dedicated to building a strong and vibrant Michigan–from urban regions to small towns, from neighborhoods to downtowns. To do this, MSHDA makes investments in people and places. We forge creative and collaborative partnerships, share knowledge, and target resources to provide affordable housing, sustain communities, preserve historic sites, and improve quality of life.

Shared Values logo
Responsiveness: We put people first and respect the opinions of our customer and staff. We listen carefully to one another, exchange information and accept responsibility.

Commitment to Communities: We strengthen communities through programs that empower individuals and communities to address their needs by marshaling their own resources to access affordable housing and community economic development.

Stewardship: We manage our financial resources effectively and efficiently. We conduct ourselves with honesty and fairness and are committed to equal opportunity and quality public service.

Innovation and Excellence: We promote continuous improvement and nurture creativity and leadership to serve our customers and our colleagues. We use our individual knowledge and experience to enrich and empower each other. We value the differences among us and work together to advance the mission and vision of MSHDA.

Operating Principles logo
These Operating Principles are driven by the MSHDA mission, vision and shared values. They are principles which we, as MSHDA staff members, strive to provide to those we serve. No specific individual or group is responsible for assuring that they are followed; rather, each of us, regardless of position, shapes our work to these principles. We call upon our co-workers to do their very best to observe these principles, and respect the honest efforts of those co-workers as they make every effort to do so.

Customer-focused Efforts: We evaluate the effectiveness of our efforts through the input we receive from our customers. Customers include staff, and those who support, benefit from, or participate in our programs and services. We regularly consider and respond to customer input and feedback in a timely manner.

Innovative Leadership: We develop our leadership skills, and serve as positive examples to one another. We actively encourage creativity at all levels. Staff and management communicate freely, openly and extensively, and value the dialogue as essential to good business.

Active Participation: We participate in MSHDA's endeavors, both individually and as team members,in a dedicated, ethical and courteous manner. We continuously improve our ability to perform our tasks.

Data-based Decision Making: We use reliable data to make decisions and then evaluate our choices using measurable criteria to make future decisions.

Outstanding Business Results: We continuously improve how we do business. We evaluate our processes and change them when necessary. We eliminate errors, improve our responsiveness, and increase our ability to produce affordable housing and finance community economic development while providing necessary services and resources.

Future Orientation: We envision and anticipate both internal and external changes. We respond individually and collectively, by creating, reviewing and revising our allocations of MSHDA's time, money and staff involvement. We align our efforts to reflect the strategies used in reaching those allocation decisions.
