LANSING, Mich. – Not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates receded in all 18 Michigan labor market areas over the month, according to data released today by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget.
“Regional labor force declines contributed to jobless rate decreases across Michigan labor markets over the month” said Wayne Rourke, labor market information director for the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics. “Payroll jobs advanced across most metro areas during June.”
Michigan regional unemployment rates ranged from 3.8 to 5.8 percent during June, with a median rate reduction of 0.3 percentage points. The most pronounced over-the-month rate decrease occurred in the Upper Peninsula (-0.7 percentage points).
Seventeen Michigan labor market areas demonstrated unemployment rate declines over the year, with a median rate decrease of 0.7 percentage points. The largest over-the-year rate decline occurred in the Northeast Lower Michigan region (-1.1 percentage points). The Detroit metropolitan statistical area (MSA) was the only Michigan region to exhibit a jobless rate increase since June 2025 (+0.6 percentage points).
Regional employment down over month and year
Total employment receded in 13 Michigan labor market areas over the month, with a median decrease of 1.1 percent. The largest over-the-month employment decline occurred in the Lansing MSA (-2.9 percent). Five regions demonstrated employment gains over the month, led by the Northwest Lower Michigan region (+1.8 percent).
Seventeen Michigan regions exhibited employment reductions over the year, with a median decline of 7.3 percent. The largest over-the-year employment decrease occurred in the Midland MSA (-9.0 percent).
Regional workforce levels down over month and year
Regional labor force totals decreased in 14 Michigan labor market areas during June, with a median decline of 1.5 percent. The most pronounced workforce reduction occurred in the Lansing MSA (-2.9 percent). Four regions demonstrated labor force gains over the month, including both the Northeast and Northwest Lower Michigan regions, the Traverse City metro area, and the Detroit MSA.
Regional workforce levels fell in 17 regions over the year, with a median decline of 8.1 percent. The Midland metro area demonstrated the largest over-the-year labor force decrease of 9.2 percent.
Regional payroll employment increases in June
According to the monthly survey of employers, Michigan not seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment advanced by 23,000, or 0.5 percent, during June. Employment gains in most major industries were partially offset by employment declines in government (-11,000) and professional and business services (-6,000).
Payroll jobs rose in 13 of Michigan’s 15 metro areas over the month, with a median increase of 0.6 percent. The largest employment gain occurred in the Traverse City MSA (+3.0 percent).
Michigan total payroll employment was essentially unchanged over the year, receding by 1,000. Seven metro areas demonstrated payroll job reductions since June 2025, led by the Midland MSA (-2.4 percent). Six regions displayed employment gains over the year, and employment remained unchanged in the Monroe and Battle Creek MSAs since June 2025.
County unemployment rates down over month and year
Seventy-nine of Michigan’s 83 counties exhibited unemployment rate declines during June, with a median reduction of 0.4 percentage points. Jobless rates fell in 76 Michigan counties over the year.
