Michigan Unemployment Rate Remains Stable in April

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.9 percent between March and April.

The U.S. unemployment rate advanced by one-tenth of a percentage point to 3.9 percent over the month. The national jobless rate matched the state rate during April. Over the year, the U.S. unemployment rate rose by 0.5 percentage points, while Michigan’s rate increased by 0.3 percentage points. Michigan’s jobless rate of 3.9 percent was tied with Delaware as the 16th highest rate in the nation.
Michigan’s labor force gain of 0.1 percent matched the national workforce increase during April. Statewide employment rose by 0.1 percent over the month, while national employment remained essentially unchanged. Michigan’s unemployment total advanced by 1.0 percent in April, matching the unemployment gain seen nationally over the month.
The statewide workforce advanced by 1.3 percent over the year, half a percentage point above the national workforce increase (+0.8 percent). Michigan’s employment total increased by 1.1 percent since April 2023, while U.S. employment edged up by 0.3 percent. Since April 2023, unemployment in the state rose by 8.9 percent and total unemployment in the U.S. jumped by 13.6 percent.
The Michigan unemployment rate matched the national rate in April.
