Michigan Unemployment Rate Advances in June

After four months with a constant rate at 3.9 percent, Michigan’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose by two-tenths of a percentage point to 4.1 percent during June.

The national unemployment rate advanced by one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.1 percent during June, matching the Michigan rate. Michigan was tied with West Virginia and Oregon for having the eleventh highest statewide rate in the nation during June. Over the year, Michigan’s jobless rate rose by four-tenths of a percentage point. The U.S. unemployment rate has increased by half of a percentage point since June 2023.
Michigan’s labor force was unchanged over the month, while the national workforce edged up by 0.2 percent. The statewide employment total receded by 0.2 percent during June, while the national employment level rose by 0.1 percent. Total unemployment in the state advanced by 4.1 percent over the month, while the national unemployment level increased by 2.4 percent.
Michigan’s labor force rose by 0.8 percent over the year, a gain similar to the increase seen nationally (+0.6 percent). Michigan’s employment total advanced by 0.4 percent since June 2023, while U.S. employment edged up by 0.1 percent. Unemployment in the state rose by 10.2 percent over the year, while the national unemployment level advanced by 13.6 percent.
The Michigan unemployment rate matched the national rate during June.
