Median Wages Up Across All Michigan Prosperity Regions

Recently released occupation and wage data for 2024 from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is available by state, metropolitan statistical area (MSA), and other substate areas to cover the balance of counties not in an MSA. In Michigan, the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics also produces custom occupation and wage estimates to align with the state’s 10 prosperity regions.

The 2024 statewide median wage was $23.22, which was an increase from last year’s median. There were two regions with median wages above the state, and eight regions below. The Detroit region had the most employment and highest median wage at $24.69, leading all other regions. The Northeast region had the lowest employment and had the lowest median wage of $20.20 per hour.

The median wage grew across all regions in 2024. The largest gain in median wage was found in the Northeast region with an increase of $1.58. The Southeast region saw the least growth with a gain of only 63 cents. Most of the larger gains in year-over-year median wages were in regions that had the lowest median wages. The only exception was the Detroit region, which had a gain of just under a dollar (96 cents) despite having the top median wage among prosperity regions.

Detroit leads the way with the highest median wages across all regions.
