About the State Demographer
The state demographer and the demography team serve as Michigan’s liaison with the U.S. Census Bureau. In that capacity, the team is the State Data Center lead agency and represents Michigan in the Federal State Cooperative for Population Estimates and Projections.
The demography team has four core functions:
- Coordinating statewide data operations for the decennial census and delivering census counts to other state agencies for funding distribution to local governments
- Submitting data inputs to improve the accuracy of the Census Bureau’s annual population estimates for Michigan and its counties, cities, villages, and townships, which are used in the distribution of population-based federal funding
- Publishing population projections for the state and counties for use in community development, services for an aging population, labor force planning, and more
- Analyzing Census data and key population trends in Michigan and serving as technical experts on the uses, limitations, and sources of Census data
