The North Eastern State Trail, a 70-mile rail-trail between Alpena and Cheboygan, is open to nonmotorized uses in the warmer months and snowmobiles Dec. 1-March 31. The trail intersects with the North Central and North Western state trails.
The trail is made made of crushed limestone and takes visitors through wetlands, farmlands, forests and small towns.
There are multiple trailheads and trailside shelters with picnic tables along the trail.
