Online “Real-Time” Case App Links DHS, Courts and Community Providers for the First Time

Lansing, Mich. April 30, 2014 – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) implemented the soft launch of its new Michigan Statewide Automated Child Welfare Information System (MiSACWIS) this morning at 8 a.m.

This new system has been built in partnership with the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB), project vendor Unisys and project manager Dewpoint.

The goal of MiSACWIS is to offer an improved case management tool for child welfare in Michigan, especially for Children’s Protective Services (CPS), foster care and adoption cases. The new system aims to make it easier to:
• Monitor all cases.
• Track both the case progress and the services offered to clients.
• Ensure better safety for children in care.

Eventually, more than 6,000 caseworkers (MDHHS and private agency) and state court employees will be using MiSACWIS daily.

At the heart of MiSACWIS is a “first” in Michigan: the ability for different entities to share child welfare case data in real-time, online. Secure access can be gained through a desk top, lap top or a variety of mobile devices.

“Providing exceptional child welfare is like a three-legged stool. It requires state government, our private agency partners and the courts working together,” said Maura Corrigan, MDHHS director. “Without equal commitment and respect by all three entities, the stool cannot stand – and we fail a child who needs us.

MiSACWIS will help us better succeed and do right by Michigan’s children and families.” MiSACWIS will be closely monitored to assure all anticipated functionality during the soft launch phase. In the coming days there will be more discussion by MDHHS, its partners and stakeholders about the new MiSACWIS system and its benefits.
