Aircraft Mechanic

Required State License(s): In order to perform mechanical work on an aircraft, a mechanic should be certificated with the Federal Aviation Administration.

There are three Michigan Flight Standard District Offices of the Federal Aviation Administration:

  • Grand Rapids (616) 954-6657
  • Detroit (734) 487-7222
  • South Bend, Indiana (219) 245-4600.
(The South Bend office serves the southwest corner of the state of Michigan.)

Before an aircraft can be returned to service, after major repairs, alterations, and annual inspections, it must be inspected by a certified mechanic with an Inspection Authorization (IA) Rating. (IA rated mechanics are not necessarily "on-site" full-time mechanics, but may be contracted to several service facilities performing aircraft mechanical functions.)

Also, if operating as an aircraft maintenance facility at a public use airport, a commercial operating agreement should be obtained with the airport owner.
