Internship Program

College interns talk about their experiences and involvement in the MDHHS Bureau of Laboratories Explore Lab Science Program.

About the Explore Lab Science Intern Program

Explore Lab Science interns play an active role in determining goals and developing material for K-12 laboratory outreach. Past interns have developed videos, games, presentations and other educational material. This experience can improve skills in preparing and delivering presentations, leadership and photo and/or video production. In addition, interns may make professional contacts, discover new career paths and learn about public health laboratory testing.

Why Intern in the Explore Lab Science Program?

Flexible

Many projects can be completed virtually. This flexibility allows full-time students to complete a portion of their internship from home. We utilize email and online resources to collaborate on projects. In-person events typically take place in the evening or on weekends, making it easier to fit in around class schedules.

Develop Leadership Skills

Interns that complete a full semester in the program and exhibit leadership skills may be designated as team leaders. Team leaders assist new interns with development of educational materials and provide initial feedback on projects. They may also be asked to lead a team for in-person events.

Career Exploration and Development

Interns are introduced to a variety of careers in public health and the public health laboratory and are offered opportunities to connect with professionals in these fields. Weekly virtual meetings address topics such as how to search for jobs, resume writing, the application process and skills like preparing accessible documents and presentations.

College Credit

Students that are willing to devote more time to the internship to develop and complete an independent project may also receive college credit. Prior to beginning an internship for credit, arrangements must be made with your college, and the project and for-credit experience must be approved by the Explore Lab Science coordinator.
