2026 Michigan Healthcare Industry Workforce Analysis Report
Real-Time Demand

Real-time demand is measured as the number of job advertisements posted online for an occupation or industry. The data is provided by The Conference Board-Lightcast Help Wanted Online. Over time, online job advertisements have become more prevalent, but usage varies as some industries are still more reliant on word-of-mouth or local advertisements. Analyzing online job advertisements can provide insights into an industry’s total available ads, top requested skills and certifications, minimum education requirements, and more.

The percent change in Healthcare advertisements has been on par with Michigan since 2021. The first seven months of 2026, however, indicate slower growth for the sector compared to the state.

Note: 2026 is a seven-month average from January through July 2026. An index year of 2021 means that advertisements in Healthcare and the state were set equal to 100 and percent changes were calculated from there.

Online job advertisement numbers have been up and down for both Healthcare and Michigan since 2021. There were 188,700 unique active ads in Healthcare during 2025, which was about 94 percent of the ads in 2021 (201,800). Due to its size within the state, the sector and Michigan are often closely aligned in job advertisement patterns. However, the first seven months of 2026 indicate a slower increase in the number of Healthcare job openings than the state. If these trends continued through the remaining months of the year, it would be the first notable difference since at least 2015, when online job ad data became more prevalent.

The top 10 certifications and skills are based on how frequently they were listed in an online job advertisement from August 2025 to July 2026. Certifications are designated credentials earned by an individual to verify skills or knowledge gained to perform a job. Common skills are often called “foundational skills” and are defined as the nonspecialized skills that cut across a broad range of occupations. Lastly, specialized skills include professional and job-specific skills requested in job advertisements.

The Healthcare sector employs individuals with a variety of skills and certifications.
