Michigan Observes 1,600 Job Advertisements for Pharmacies and Drug Retailers in October 2024.

Industry Spotlight: Pharmacies and Drug Retailers

In October 2024, roughly 1,600 online advertisements were available in the state for the industry of Pharmacies and drug retailers. This is a typical level of available advertisements in the industry for Michigan. Roughly half of the available advertisements during the month were concentrated within the Detroit Metro region as Oakland (320 ads), Wayne (260 ads), and Macomb (150 ads) counties were the top three locations. 

The main companies posting advertisements were Walgreens and CVS Health. Combined, these companies accounted for nearly 90 percent of the total Pharmacies and drug retailers advertisements in the state. The top occupations sought after were Pharmacy technicians, Customer service representatives, and Pharmacists.

Occupational Spotlight: Pharmacists and Pharmacy technicians

Pharmacists

There were roughly 400 online advertisements available statewide in October 2024 for Pharmacists.  The top three industries for postings were Pharmacies and drug retailers (130 ads), General medical and surgical hospitals (50 ads), and Offices of physicians (40 ads).

Typical duties of a Pharmacist include dispensing prescription medications and providing information to patients about the drugs and their use. They may also advise physicians and other healthcare professionals on medications. In Michigan, there were approximately 10,500 individuals employed in this occupation in 2023 and the median annual salary was $134,660.

Baseline skills are typically those that apply to a wide range of positions and do not require specific training. The top baseline skills advertised for Pharmacists during the month were customer service, management, and communication. Specialized skills are those that are more job-specific. The top specialized skills posted were medical prescription, pharmacy operations, and medication dispensation.

Pharmacy technicians

Michigan had 1,500 total available online advertisements for Pharmacy technicians in October 2024. Most of these ads were concentrated within the industry of Pharmacies and drug retailers (590 ads) with some spread throughout industries such as General medical and surgical hospitals (130 ads) or Department stores (100 ads).

The most advertised minimum education for this occupation was a high school diploma or equivalent. This is on par with the typical entry-level education and training required for Pharmacy technicians, which is a high school diploma or equivalent and moderate-term on-the-job training. Pharmacy technicians typically work under the supervision of pharmacists, and they help dispense prescription medication to customers or health professionals. In 2023, Pharmacy technicians earned a median annual salary of $39,210 in Michigan and there were roughly 14,200 people employed in the position.

Common baseline skills listed in advertisements for the occupation were customer service, mathematics, and packaging and labeling. The top specialized skills listed most often were medical prescriptions, pharmacist assistance, and pharmaceuticals.
