The Detroit Metro Region Had the Most Active Registered Apprentices in 2024
May 08, 2025
This month’s Map of the Month highlights the share of active registered apprentices in 2024 by Prosperity Region. For more information on registered apprentices in Michigan, please read the Registered Apprenticeship in Michigan – 2025 Report.
Note: In this analysis, the region of active registered apprentices was determined by the location of the Registered Apprenticeship program the registered apprentice was enrolled in rather than the registered apprentice's home location.
There were 20,600 active registered apprentices across Michigan in 2024. The Detroit Metro region accounted for 7,920 active registered apprentices, or 38.5 percent of the statewide total. This was in line with the region’s share of the state’s population in 2024 (39.0 percent).
East Michigan had the second-largest share (18.8 percent) of active registered apprentices, largely because of the presence of a centralized program for Construction laborers within the region. West Michigan had the third-largest share (12.3 percent) of active registered apprentices while also having the largest share (29.1 percent) of the state’s 1,200 Registered Apprenticeship programs.
Construction had the largest share of registered apprentices in six of Michigan’s Prosperity Regions in 2024, led by East Michigan at 94.8 percent. Southeast Michigan and East Central Michigan followed at 77.8 percent and 76.2 percent, respectively.
Nontraditional industries (those not in Construction or Manufacturing) accounted for a majority of active registered apprentices in four regions. This included Northeast Michigan, where 89.1 percent of active registered apprentices were in Transportation and warehousing, Northwest Michigan, the Upper Peninsula, and Southwest Michigan.
The Detroit Metro region had the greatest share of active Registered Apprentices at 38.5 percent.
