Medication-Assisted Treatment
Medication-Assisted Treatment combines one of three FDA-approved medications, referred to as Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), often in conjunction with counseling, to treat opioid use disorder. These medications include methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone. The National Academy of Sciences has found that available evidence “clearly establishes” the increased effectiveness of MOUD.

Abstinence-based treatment is complete cessation from all substances and medications in combination with counseling and connection to a community of other recovering individuals.
