This rustic equestrian campground is nestled on Avery Lake and offers opportunities for horseback riding, hiking, boating and fishing. All sites have picket posts and site #10 has corrals for two horses. There is also a submersible well that requires a 2,500 watt generator. The campground is located 10 miles southwest of Atlanta via County Road 487 and Avery Lake Road.
From the campground, equestrians can access Big Oaks Equestrian Trails and many state forest roads that are open to horseback riding.
This campground is maintained with the help of the Alpena County Horseman's Club
What to expect, finding a site
These rustic campgrounds offer stunning river and lakefront settings, perfect for fishing, boating, and paddling. Here's what you can expect:
- No reservations. Sites available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- There are vault toilets.
- Potable (drinking) water is available from a hand-pump well.
- No electrical available.
- Overnight fees ($20 for most sites) and registration procedures are posted at the information kiosk at each campground.
- Camping is limited to a 15-day maximum stay.
- One camping unit and six people are allowed per site.

Perch, bass, pike, bluegill and walleye are caught in Avery Lake. Other nearby fishing opportunities include Crooked Lake (5 miles north) and Thunder Bay River (7 miles northeast).
