Headquarters Lake Equestrian State Forest Campground
Headquarters Lake Equestrian State Forest Campground
Situated on the shore of Headquarters Lake, this rustic 9-site equestrian campground offers vault toilets and potable water from a hand-pump well. The sites accommodate tents and trailers of all sizes. Primarily intended for campers with horses due to limited local options, equestrians heavily rely on this campground. If you are not camping with horses, we kindly ask that you consider other state forest campgrounds.
Near the entrance, a dedicated equestrian day-use and staging area provides parking, four picket poles, an ADA accessible mounting ramp, a manure pit and access to the well-marked Headquarters Lake Equestrian Trails. Further down the road, a fire ring with benches offers a space for warmth and meal preparation. A highlight is the trail to Lake Superior, which is an 18-mile round trip ride.
The campground is located 23 miles north of Newberry via M-123 and County Road 407.
Unlike the first-come, first-served policy of most state forest campgrounds, all 9 sites at this location can be conveniently reserved online at MIDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757.
