Kal-Haven Trail State Park
Kal-Haven Trail State Park
Stretching 33.5 miles between Kalamazoo and South Haven in southwest Michigan, Kal-Haven Trail State Park rests on an abandoned railroad bed constructed in 1871. The converted rail-trail winds through gorgeous scenery, including wooded areas, farmlands, streams and rivers. The trail is made of a limestone/slag surface and, while the trail is open to many types of bicycles, road bikes are not recommended.
The village of Bloomingdale is considered the midpoint and serves as a great rest spot that features a caboose, Bloomindale Depot Museum (open for tours) and vault toilet for visitors.
The Kal-Haven Heritage Trail project includes 31 exhibit panels that explore the natural and cultural history of the area. An accessible mobile app adds the opportunity to explore the area’s natural and cultural history. Android users can download it on Google Play and Apple iPhone.
Trailheads
The two main trailheads are located at either end of the trail in the cities of Kalamazoo and South Haven. There are several other access points along the trail, including the village of Bloomingdale and Grand Junction.
